The history of the Château de Lez-Eaux campsite
The history of Château de Lez-Eaux: a Norman estate between land and sea
The origins of the estate date back to the 15th century, when Normandy was still largely rural. The château itself was built shortly before the French Revolution. The name “Lez-Eaux” comes from Old French: “lez” means “near”. It quite literally refers to a domain “near the water”, surrounded by streams and shaped by the presence of a pond. This pond, now used for fishing, was redesigned in 1850.
In 1865, the Potier de la Varde family became the owners and carried out major renovation works:
- complete restoration of the château
- refurbishment of floors and roofing
- filling in of the former moats

From château to campsite: a gradual transformation
The turning point came in 1960. At that time, Michel de la Varde opened the estate to campers. The site became one of the first members of Les Castels, a network specialising in campsites set within historic estates.
Initially, only simple pitches were available. But the vision quickly evolved with Nicolas de la Varde and his wife Brigitte, who took over in 1977 and continued the family legacy:
- installation of mobile homes
- construction of an outdoor swimming pool in 1979
- gradual structuring and expansion of the estate
This is not a standard campsite, but a domain passed down through generations. Today, Cécile de la Varde, daughter of Nicolas and Brigitte, manages the site alongside her husband. The campsite now covers 12 hectares and offers 229 spacious pitches, including options for tents, caravans and various types of accommodation.
A campsite combining nature, comfort and commitment
Château de Lez-Eaux is a 5-star campsite offering a high level of comfort while preserving its natural environment.
One of its main highlights is the water park:
- a 1,300 m² indoor pool
- a constant temperature of around 29°C
- tropical vegetation under glass
- water slides and a fun aquatic area for all ages
…as well as its environmental commitments:
- treehouses without electricity
- responsible energy management
- no use of pesticides
- a strong focus on local produce
The campsite is also certified with the Clef Verte (Green Key) and Normandie Qualité Tourisme labels, both of which recognise high standards in service quality and environmental practices.
