Granville is a former corsair town on the west coast of Normandy, built on a rocky headland above the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel. It combines a walled Upper Town, France's largest shellfish port, sandy beaches and the childhood home of Christian Dior, with some of the largest tides in Europe. The Upper Town, Dior's villa and Le Plat Gousset

Start in the Haute Ville, the walled Upper Town, where granite ramparts look out over the bay and the Chausey Islands. Below the walls, the promenade of Le Plat Gousset runs along the main beach, lined with Belle Époque villas and the casino. A day trip to the Chausey Islands

Boats leave Granville harbour for the Chausey Islands all year round, with a crossing of around an hour. The archipelago belongs to Granville and is a protected, car-free natural site: walk the coastal path around the Grande Île, picnic on white sand beaches and watch the tide reveal hundreds of islets at low water. Book your crossing in advance between April and September.

Along the coast: Saint-Pair, Carolles and Mont-Saint-Michel

The beaches of Saint-Pair-sur-Mer, Jullouville and Carolles stretch south from the campsite towards the bay. At Carolles, the Cabane Vauban, a former customs lookout, sits on the cliffs above the Vallée des Peintres walking trail. Further south, Mont-Saint-Michel is around 26 miles away, and the Normandy side of the bay offers quieter viewpoints at Genêts and Saint-Jean-le-Thomas. Back in Granville, try Bouchot mussels, salt marsh lamb from the bay and a Normandy apple crêpe.

By ferry, the Portsmouth–Saint-Malo crossing lands you around 53 miles from the campsite. Crossings to Cherbourg (from Poole or Portsmouth) and Caen–Ouistreham (from Portsmouth) are around an hour's drive away; from Caen, follow the A84, then the D924 to Granville. Taking your own car means your tent, caravan or camper van travels with you.
By train, take the Eurostar to Paris, then a direct train from Paris Montparnasse to Granville station, 5 miles from the campsite.
By air, Rennes airport is around 68 miles from Château de Lez Eaux (seasonal UK routes, check current schedules before booking).

When to visit Granville

July and August bring the longest days, the outdoor pool and the full summer programme at the campsite, from the Tuesday evening market to aperitif concerts. May, June and September offer milder weather, quieter beaches and lower ferry fares. In February, Granville's carnival, listed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage, fills the town for four days.
