Visiting Le Mans and the Sarthe Region: our favourite places to discover

Between medieval heritage, unspoilt countryside and legendary motorsport history, Le Mans and the Sarthe region have plenty of surprises in store. Valérie and Benoît Dores, owners of the estate, share some of the places that give this peaceful part of western France its unique charm.

Staying at Château de Chanteloup, a 5-star campsite near Le Mans

Before setting off to explore the city and its surroundings, it is impossible not to mention the setting where you will be staying. The 5-star campsite in Sarthe at Château de Chanteloup has a truly special atmosphere. Hidden behind large green walls of trees and plants, this 21-hectare estate feels more like a family property than a traditional campsite. Valérie and Benoît Dores welcome guests with warmth and simplicity, in a spirit that perfectly reflects the Les Castels philosophy. Many visitors return year after year… surely the best recommendation possible.

Among roses, hydrangeas and century-old trees, you will find spacious pitches with plenty of privacy, glamping accommodation, woodland cabins and charming cottages set within the château’s outbuildings. This luxury campsite near Le Mans also offers a heated swimming pool, a fishing pond, a self-service vegetable garden and a welcoming restaurant.

Here are some of the things guests particularly enjoy at Château de Chanteloup:

  • Spacious pitches surrounded by nature
  • The peaceful wooded parkland
  • Glamping tents and unusual accommodation
  • A warm and family-friendly atmosphere

What to visit in Le Mans? The highlights of Sarthe heritage

Saint-Julien Cathedral and the medieval Old Town

It is impossible to visit the city without stopping at the magnificent Saint-Julien Cathedral. I was particularly impressed by its Romanesque stained-glass windows, considered among the finest in France. Around the cathedral, the historic district has an almost cinematic atmosphere. Cobbled streets, half-timbered houses and charming little squares genuinely make you feel as though you have stepped back in time. Exploring the Plantagenet City is undoubtedly one of the best experiences to enjoy in Le Mans.

You will also find plenty of cafés, independent shops and some excellent local restaurants.

The Abbey of l’Épau, one of Sarthe’s most beautiful historic sites

Among Valérie and Benoît Dores’ favourite places, the Abbey of l’Épau is well worth a visit. Located just a few minutes from the city centre, this former 13th-century Cistercian abbey offers a wonderfully peaceful setting.

The grounds are especially beautiful in spring and summer, and exhibitions and concerts are regularly held there.

Tessé Museum and the museums of Le Mans

Le Mans has several museums that are well worth visiting, but the Tessé Museum is probably the best known. Inside, you can discover collections of French, Italian and Flemish paintings, alongside fascinating archaeological artefacts.

The museum also features reconstructed Egyptian tombs, which are particularly popular with children.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit: a legendary visit

Even if you are not a motorsport enthusiast, the 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit is still incredibly impressive. This iconic venue forms part of international motorsport history.

The museum retraces the great moments of the race and displays legendary vehicles. You can also explore part of the circuit itself and experience the unique atmosphere of the site. During major racing events, the whole city takes on a completely different energy. Between the motor museum, specialist shops and sporting events, the site attracts visitors from all over the world every year.

A small tip if you are staying at Château de Chanteloup during summer: remember to book certain visits in advance during major motorsport events.

Nature and walks: discovering Sarthe differently

L’Arche de la Nature, perfect for families Located just outside the city, L’Arche de la Nature is one of those places families tend to love. This vast natural area combines woodland, an educational farm, walking trails and activities.

It is an ideal outing after a day spent sightseeing in the city. You can cycle, observe animals or simply enjoy some quiet time surrounded by nature.

The Alpes Mancelles, unexpected scenery in western France

The Alpes Mancelles are often described as one of western France’s best-kept secrets. Rolling wooded hills, picturesque villages, hiking trails and beautiful viewpoints give this northern part of Sarthe a landscape very different from the flat plains often associated with the west of France.

If you enjoy walking, canoeing or discovering peaceful villages, this excursion is definitely worth a full day during your holiday. Nature holidays in Sarthe, hiking, outdoor activities and family walks all take on another dimension here.
