The History of the Domaine de la Bien-Assise
Whether you are travelling onwards to England or seeking an elegant countryside retreat between land and sea, this address ticks every box for high-end outdoor tourism — with genuine character to match.
A château shaped by five centuries of history
The setting is established in Guînes, a village steeped in history and known for a remarkable event: in 1785, Jean-Pierre Blanchard and Dr Jeffries landed their balloon here, becoming the first men to cross the English Channel by air. In Guînes, history is never far away.
The Château de la Bien-Assise, built in 1806 to designs by Claude-Nicolas Ledoux, stands on the remains of a former fortress destroyed in the sixteenth century during the siege led by the Duke of Guise. Fragmented at the beginning of the twentieth century and requisitioned during the Second World War to house refugees, the estate regained its unity in 1951 when it was transformed into a tourist centre.
Today, under the stewardship of Sophie and Frédéric Mancho, the estate has achieved a subtle balance between preserved heritage and contemporary hospitality. The sense of history remains palpable, yet the atmosphere is warm, welcoming and very much alive.

Staying in a 15-hectare park… with every comfort
The first impression on arrival is space. The estate extends across 15 hectares of wooded parkland, where pitches blend harmoniously into the surrounding greenery. There are no tightly packed rows here: the 198 pitches (including 50 mobile homes) range from 90 to 200 m² and are carefully bordered by natural hedges to ensure privacy and tranquillity.
Each pitch is equipped with a 10-amp electric hook-up, while three modern sanitary blocks — two of them heated — provide excellent comfort. Facilities are accessible to guests with reduced mobility, and an adapted mobile home is also available.
For an even more exclusive experience, the 200 m² premium pitches include garden furniture, a barbecue, a refrigerator and complimentary Wi-Fi. It is precisely these thoughtful details that transform a simple stay into a luxurious break in the heart of nature.
And should the northern weather prove unpredictable, the covered and heated swimming pool ensures relaxation throughout the camping season, from late April to late September.
La Ferme Gourmande: dining worth the journey
It would be impossible to speak of the Domaine de la Bien-Assise without mentioning its restaurant, housed in a former farmhouse overlooking a magnificent historic dovecote. The setting is authentic, welcoming and almost timeless.
At “La Ferme Gourmande”, the cuisine celebrates local produce and regional specialities. Dishes are prepared on site using fresh ingredients, and the menu alternates between accessible set menus and more indulgent options for discerning diners. In summer, the terrace becomes a favourite gathering place, perfect for enjoying the gentle rhythm of long northern evenings.
Open all year round and welcoming non-resident guests, the restaurant is an integral part of the estate’s identity.

On the doorstep of the Two Caps and the Opal Coast
A stay here also means enjoying an ideal base for exploring the coastline. Just a few kilometres away, the Grand Site des Deux Caps offers some of the most spectacular scenery in the region. Between Cap Blanc-Nez and Cap Gris-Nez, dramatic cliffs overlook the North Sea, inviting both hikers and dreamers alike.
Charming seaside resorts with a delightfully nostalgic feel line the coast, perfect for a summer stroll or a leisurely lunch by the sea. The area is also rich in history, from Calais to the impressive Blockhaus d’Éperlecques, each site telling part of the story of this land shaped by crossings and encounters.

A strong commitment to sustainability
The Domaine de la Bien-Assise is not only elegant and comfortable; it is also committed to responsible tourism. The estate has been awarded the Clef Verte label, France’s leading certification for sustainable tourist accommodation, as well as the Camping Qualité label.
These distinctions reflect a genuine commitment to environmental responsibility, high standards of service and quality guest experience.
Why we love it
Because the place has soul. Because it combines heritage, nature and five-star amenities without ever feeling ostentatious. Because it works equally well as a refined stopover en route to England or as a restorative break on the Opal Coast.
The Domaine de la Bien-Assise is more than a campsite: it is a destination in its own right, where history meets contemporary comfort and where every stay leaves a lasting impression.
