The history of Domaine de Sévenier: from vineyards to an agricultural revolution
Before the chalets and holiday stays, there was a story – and it begins with Albert Seibel.
In the 19th century, French vineyards were struck by a devastating crisis: phylloxera. This tiny insect destroyed a large proportion of the country's vines. In response, Albert Seibel developed disease-resistant hybrid grape varieties. For several decades, these varieties represented an important part of French viticulture. And it was here, in Lagorce, that some of these grape varieties were tested and cultivated. Names such as Plantet and Rayon d'Or still exist today, serving as discreet reminders of this remarkable period in wine-growing history.

A playground for the village children
After agricultural activity came to an end, the estate entered a second, more informal chapter of its history. For many years, it became a playground for the children of Lagorce. A free and almost wild space, deeply rooted in local memories. Long before welcoming holidaymakers, this place was filled with games, laughter and countless summer memories.
The transformation into a holiday park: a new beginning in 2009
In 2004, Richard Chalvet purchased the property with a clear vision: to create a place where nature and comfort could coexist harmoniously. Work began in 2008, and in 2009 the site reopened in a completely new form as a high-end outdoor holiday destination.
Since then, the estate has continued to evolve:
- Planting of more than 1,500 trees
- Creation of a heated swimming pool
- Development of traditional dry-stone landscaping
- Opening of a wellness area in 2017
- Creation of a seminar and events room
A Les Castels campsite committed to sustainable tourism
Today, Domaine de Sévenier & Spa embraces a sustainable tourism approach in the Ardèche.
The estate has been awarded the Green Key certification and implements numerous environmentally friendly initiatives:
- Solar water heaters on the chalets
- Natural building materials such as hemp, cork and wood fibre
- Shared composting facilities and waste sorting
- Reuse of treated wastewater for irrigation
- Pesticide-free green spaces
- An almost entirely pedestrian estate
This commitment can be seen throughout the site. Even the restaurant follows the same philosophy, focusing on local ingredients and home-made cuisine.

An experience designed down to the finest detail
Over the years, the campsite has developed a distinctive identity. Guests can enjoy a spa overlooking the Ardèche Gorges, massages using products from the estate, a vegetable garden open to visitors, and activities such as wine tastings and astronomy evenings.
This is very much a slow tourism destination, where a holiday becomes a complete experience rather than simply a place to stay.
My tips for exploring the area around Domaine de Sévenier
Just a few minutes from the estate, several villages are well worth a visit. I particularly recommend Lagorce itself, which is often overshadowed by its more famous neighbours. Its stone alleyways, vaulted passageways and peaceful atmosphere make it a delightful place to explore, especially in the evening.

A little further away lies Balazuc, officially listed among the most beautiful villages in France. To avoid the crowds, it is best visited early in the morning or later in the evening. The views over the river are superb. If you enjoy medieval settings, Vogüé is another excellent choice, with its château overlooking the Ardèche River.
The Ardèche Gorges are famous, but some viewpoints remain surprisingly peaceful. I recommend the Serre de Tourre viewpoint, where the panorama is spectacular and easily accessible. Another wonderful location is the Cirque de Gens, less crowded yet equally impressive. It is ideal for a short walk with breathtaking scenery. And of course, there is the famous Chauvet Cave 2, the replica of the original prehistoric cave. Even though it is a well-known attraction, the visit remains truly remarkable.
For something a little different, I also recommend Aven d'Orgnac. Less publicised than some of the region's other attractions, it nevertheless impresses visitors with its vast underground chambers. If you prefer outdoor activities, consider exploring the small river beaches around Lagorce. Some can be reached on foot and are far quieter than the more popular tourist spots.
